The market in the UK and Europe continues to respond very positively to Eurolight®, the lightweight board introduced just over a year ago by EGGER, Europe’s leading wood-based panels manufacturer.
EGGER’s own brand of lightweight boards went into large-scale production well ahead of schedule in August, 2006, and in the intervening period, the lightweight topic has gathered significant momentum. Eurolight® has quickly developed into a fully formed, in-demand product. A sandwich construction with surface layers of very rigid Eurospan® 2000 thin chipboard and a cardboard honeycomb core, Eurolight® offers major benefits.
As well as being lightweight (for comparison purposes Eurolight® is 50% lighter than the equivalent thickness of chipboard), it also reduces wood usage, which in turn means there is a reduction in material, transport and logistic costs. Furthermore, from an aesthetic point of view distinctive, high perceived value styles, in thicknesses which previously would have been impractical, can be created.
Based on an innovative construction method, the Eurolight® boards open up new opportunities for the furniture construction and interior fittings markets, offering a range of solutions for exhibition fittings, tables, shelves, various office furnishings, contemporary living concepts and kitchens and worktops.
Current design trends often demand the use of thicker materials to convey contemporary design and high quality. Eurolight® meets such design requirements with a range of attractive decors and textures in a chunky thickness. It is available in a wide range of options*, including frameless and framed boards as well as worktops.
As the word has spread, the demand for Eurolight® has increased and the company has responded by adding more decors to the range. The range of Eurolight® Décor (melamine finish) has been increased from 10 to 20 décor’s. These 20 colours are available in both 38mm and 50mm thicknesses. The standard size of the panel is 2800 x 2070 mm.
Andrew Sanderson, marketing co-ordinator at EGGER UK, says: “Eurolight® has created a huge amount of interest and we are widening the range by adding some of our recent décor introductions such as Autumn Plum (H3129), Anthracite Highland Oak (H3363) and Natural Dijon Walnut (H3734) to meet market demand.”
As part of its drive to educate the market about the usability of EUROLIGHT®, Egger has recently launched a new film to demonstrate how to handle and process the panels. It offers practical tips and is especially useful for manufacturers, joiners and shopfitters. The film gives practical hands-on information for the day-to-day handling of the boards in three chapters.
The first covers processing instructions from Eurolight® Décor to a finished piece of furniture, the second shows how to fabricate Eurolight® with veneer and laminate and the third gives details of specialist handling solutions developed for Eurolight® worktops, for example the assembly of a sink using Innofix® T-Profile.
The film can be easily downloaded from the ZOOM® website (egger.co.uk/zoom), or it can be ordered on DVD via EGGER’s sample hotline, (tel 01434 613304), where callers can order samples, brochures and information sheets.
As well as lightweight boards for furniture construction Egger also offer lightweight postformed worktops in 38mm and 60mm. The quality of EGGER’s Eurolight® worktop has also been recognised by a nomination for the Federal Republic of Germany's design prize 2008. Known in the field as the "prize amongst prizes", it is the republic's way of honouring extraordinary achievement in the field of product design.
