EGGER flooring features on Hit Channel 4 TV show

12.08.2008

WEYROC® Protect, produced by EGGER, Europe’s leading wood-based panel manufacturer was a key component in a bespoke new-build home which appeared on the popular Channel 4 Television show Grand Designs.

The project, located on a plot of land adjacent to an old industrial site complete with lime kilns in Midlothian, Scotland, ran into difficulties when planning delays led to the summer build being delayed until the harsh Scottish winter.

The modernist-inspired, long, sleek-rectangular family home was built using a variety of environmentally friendly materials to minimise its impact on the surrounding landscape and natural world.  Locally sourced timber was used for the frame, sedum for the roof, breathable lime render for the exterior along with larch cladding and glazing.

Because the rear of the house is set into a hillside, installing the second floor was integral to enabling the safe construction of the roof.  The unrelenting wet winter weather meant traditional flooring, which is susceptible to warping and de-layering when exposed to the lightest of showers, was unsuitable, so contractors had to find an alternative.

EGGER’s WEYROC® Protect was specified by local timber merchant, Thornbridge Timber, in Dalkeith. It is specifically designed to shrug off prolonged exposure to damp conditions and provides a safe working platform thanks to its special anti-slip finish, which provides excellent foot-holding properties for site workers at height.

In total, 130 sheets of WEYROC® Protect 22mm and 15 bottles of WEYROC® D4 adhesive were used in the build, overseen by Gordon Shepherd, EGGER’s Scottish sales manager and the team at Thornbridge Timber.

Used as part of EGGER’s Rapid Deck ‘no-nails’ chipboard system, WEYROC® Protect can also reduce installation times. Incorporating the specially formulated Weyroc D4 Adhesive, the Rapid Deck system enables flooring to be glue-fixed to joists without the need for nails and in wet weather conditions.

The water resistant WEYROC® D4 Adhesive gives excellent bonding strength between tongue and groove boards as well as bonding between joists or I-beams and boards. This makes it even more suitable for use when laying chipboard flooring during damp conditions.

Kathryn Burton, EGGER’s UK marketing co-ordinator for construction products, said: “We work tirelessly to bring new and innovative products to the market place that meets our customers’ needs.

“WEYROC® Protect is made from WEYROC® P5 flooring grade chipboard manufactured at our plant in Hexham, Northumberland, and is faced with thermosetting resin impregnated Kraft paper on both sides of the board providing double protection and preventing moisture from getting in. It was ideal for the build conditions faced by the Grand Designs team.”

WEYROC® Protect is CE certified and possesses the coveted BBA certificate both for the board itself and for use as a component in the Rapid Deck floor laying system.  Ideal as a floor across joists, WEYROC® Protect can be exposed to the elements for 42 days during the building process and can be laid during light rain thus reducing weather related stoppages and resulting in speedier completions.
