01.11.2005 EGGER UK Ltd’s Weyroc Protect flooring not only meets but exceeds the latest requirements for environmental performance in the new build sector.
Specifically, the company has announced that Protect helps builders achieve EcoHomes’ requirements.
EcoHomes is a rating tool designed to assess the environmental performance of new, converted or renovated homes. When applied to new build and refurbished buildings, it enables companies to specify and manufacture against nationally recognised ratings.
It is scored using credits, which add up to a rating. To achieve a ‘very good or excellent’ rating, issues such as material sourcing ecology and thermal and noise insulation have to be addressed.
So, Weyroc Protect can help to meet EcoHomes’ requirements in the following ways:
• Sections Ene1 and Ene2 of Eco Homes relate to the requirements for the thermal conductivity of building materials this relates to Part L (England), Part J (Scotland) and Part F (Northern Ireland) building regulations, the ‘U’ value required by these regulations is less than 0.25W/m2K. Weyroc Protect is measured at 0.14 W/m2K.
• Section ‘Mat 1 – Timber: Basic Building Elements’ and ‘Mat 2 – Timber: Finishing Elements’ relate to the sustainability of the timber used. Timber and timber products are thought to be the only truly renewable materials used in construction. Maximum EcoHomes credits can be received by using 75% FSC or 95% PEFC material from ‘temperate resources or recycled/reused timber’.
All of Egger’s UK production is independently certified by BM Trada to be FSC certified and the company’s harvesting company Egger Forestry meets ISO14001 requirements. Studies conducted by the BRE have shown that 13.8% of UK waste is in the form of timber.
The composition of Weyroc Protect not only includes a proportion of recycled material but it can be easily recycled at the end of its useful life. Building products made from recycled materials reduce solid waste problems, cut energy consumption in manufacturing, and save on natural resource use, whilst not compromising performance.
• EcoHomes’ guidelines state that materials should be avoided that include ozone-depleting chemicals or have a high global warming potential. Section ‘Mat 4 Environmental Impact Of Materials’ relates to floors. Weyroc Protect conforms with this through its production in accordance with EN312:P5, and its manufacture being CFC free and in addition the boards are produced to E1 class formaldehyde content.
• Section ‘Hea 2’ relates to sound insulation. This is a key issue for both specifiers and manufacturers of building materials - they must be confident that performance levels will be appropriate for the building type and occupant comfort. Weyroc Protect has been independently tested by leading I-Joist manufacturer and passed all Approved Document E requirements of the 2003 building regulations.
